TRAVEL TIP- MOVE OVER, SLOW DOWN

07/03/2026: With Fourth of July travel well underway, we remind everyone of the "Move Over, Slow Down" law in Pennsylvania. Our agency frequently works incidents on Interstate 81 and other high volume roadways. Many times, traffic refuses to move over or slow down. The law requires drivers approaching an emergency response area who are able to safely merge in to a lane further away from the response area to "pass at a speed no more than 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit and reasonable for safely passing". Those unable to do so should slow down even further when passing the incident.

While it may cause a delay in your travel plans, it could save a life. The recent incident on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County involving a Trooper that was struck and killed reinforces the need to move over, slow down and maybe save a life.

Our units utilize Haas Safety Cloud transmitters to give advance warning of emergency operations to drivers of various vehicle manufacturers and users of mapping applications. It helps, but ultimately it is up to the operator to not drive distracted and make the decision to move over and slow down when they see flashing lights on the road.
